CRS is compulsory rural service, considered as a nightmare by the majority of MBBS passouts,is a great platform for social service and a wonderful experience for future life as far as i am concerned.
Presently into the 5th month of that , I have some wonderful experiences for a lifetime to cherish…ranging from people offering seats in bus to blessings for future life. There are some unforgettable incidents in these 4 months of my CRS, which I want to share with everyone who thinks CRS is a waste of time for the P G aspiring highly intellectual MBBS passouts and for those who miss CRS either because they are All India admissions or they studied in private colleges.
First I will start with a good pleasant experience, most of you reading this will have the experience or might have heard of stories where HS(if they are so good and caring) being offered money. But I had a different experience during this CRS, I saw a patient with chest pain , a female about 45years …so hearing the history i asked her to take ECG…but she didnot turn up even after i saw my last patient for the day.I decided to wait for some more time, then she came some 10 min later with the ECG…and it was normal on hearing my remark of the ECG she was relieved and she praised me for staying late for her…and any guesses what she gave me?…a polo….though i refused she affectionately forced me to take that by saying “you waited for me even without taking lunch for this long”….I accepted it realizing her affection…but a question remained unanswered in my mind after that…whether she bought that polo for me or for her son waiting at home expecting a polo…
Next I will tell a funny experience in op,our CHC(community health centre )is not a big one , but sometimes OP can be a little heavy ,particularly day after rain,so we used to hear complaints so passively that even with closed ears one can understand what they are saying “cough, fever, joint pain,…..” and list of complaints goes on and on and on.In between these some really funny complaint comes(please do not have the impression that I am making fun of patients).A fine sunny day a 60-65 year old female came with a 12 yr old boy complaining of wound on her finger,on examining I asked how she got this….she said in a desperate voice my son’s wife bit me ….OMG….I did not have anything to say…so I told her she has to take some medicines for this…some antibiotics(as human bites are the most dirty bites , they need antibiotic cover)…but our hospital will provide antibiotics only to those who come with BPL card,so for that I asked whether she has it…then came the fantastic answer….”oooh no sir, after biting me she left the house with the ration card”…hmm…nothing more to say …
Last incident , though i have lot more to say….I will finish with a heart touching one.Alcohol and cigarette are like bread and butter for malayalis with no special mention needed for manual laborers who toil hard all day …but the plight of those at home both children and his wife is miserable and unimaginable…While at op , a mother about 30 years and her son about 8 years came with some complaints for her and hers son …on finishing their complaints, they handed me another op ticket that of a 35 year old male…on enquiring it was for her husband …after writing medicines for the complaints that the mother told, while I was about to hand over the op ticket, her son requested ”Doctor please write in that op ticket not to drink alcohol again..”
